Whether you’re an avid reader or simply enjoy a good discussion, The Lion Book Club is a friendly and informal group that meets on the third Thursday of each month in the snug. There are two sessions to choose from, 1.00pm–2.00pm or 6.30pm–7.30pm. You’re welcome to come to whichever session suits you best.
New faces are always welcome, whether you’ve read the book cover to cover, only managed a few chapters, or simply fancy joining the conversation over a drink.

Thursday 20 August – Wifedom by Anna Funder
After a lively discussion of The Elements by John Boyne, we’re looking forward to our next read. Wifedom uncovers the remarkable and often overlooked life of Eileen O’Shaughnessy, wife of George Orwell, exploring the hidden stories behind one of literature’s most famous marriages.
Coming Up
- 17 September – Four Letters of Love by Niall Williams. A beautifully written, uplifting novel about fate, family and love, following two lives that seem destined to intertwine.
- 15 October – Gabriel’s Moon by William Boyd. A gripping Cold War spy thriller from one of Britain’s best-loved storytellers. Recently selected by The Queen’s Reading Room Book Club, so we’ll be in good company!
- 19 November – The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. A compelling historical novel set at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, following three female codebreakers whose friendship is tested by secrets, betrayal and courage.
- 10 December – Christmas Book Club Supper. Instead of our usual book discussion, we’ll be celebrating the festive season with our annual Book Club Christmas Supper from 7.00pm.
